Land Rover appear to be ever ready to give their veteran Defender model a new lease of life. At Europe’s largest exhibition devoted to hunting, shooting and fishing… the ‘Jagd & Hund’ in Dortmund… the special model dubbed Blaser Edition will have its premiere. This is not only a vehicle which has been given amenities of the highest level but one which has many useful extras on board. (Thomas Harloff , 25.01.2012)
The survivor
Hardly any other automobile model has a more highly developed survival instinct than the Land Rover Defender. There have been numerous facelifts and upgrades… often announced as the last before production ends… which have prolonged the life of the British automobile which has been built since 1948. The most recent modifications date back to the end of last year when the new diesel engine was introduced with state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment. Now Land Rover are playing the ‘lifestyle’ and ‘exclusivity’ cards with their version based on a Defender 110 Station Wagon SE which will see production as a limited edition model. The clientele targeted are those whose passion is hunting and whose preference is for a bit of luxury too.
Practicality and comfort
At the ‘Jagd & Hund’ fair in Dortmund… Europe’s largest event for the huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’ crowd… the Defender will be on show as the ‘Blaser Edition’. Readers who are not gun freaks need to know that the firm Blaser is a major maker of hunting guns, based in southern Bavaria, and in this instance the partner of the automobile manufacturer. There is room in a special weapons safe solidly built into the loading space at the back of the Defender for a total of five rifles or shotguns, the needed ammunition and other items of the hunter’s kit. In the passenger cabin there is… for a Defender… a maximum of comfort with leather upholstered seats, leather and aluminium accents for the gear-shift and hand-brake levers, air conditioning and heating for both front windshield and the front seats.
Up to the challenge
At first sight the Defender already has the look of an indomitable vehicle. Chequer plating in black affords protection, there is a front bull-bar and an ‘Expedition’ roof-rack accessible via the built-in ladder. This is an auto absolutely ready for the hunting grounds. There are practical extras in the form of additional search-lights, work lights, trailer coupling and an electric winch capable of handling over four tons of burden… there are not many off-road challenges for which the Land Rover is not equipped. Furthermore the Blaser Edition has no fear of water… there is the tall ‘snorkel’ formed air intake high enough to that the SUV can deal with depths of even more than the customary fifty centimetres.
Cleaner but more powerful
It must also be noted that the Blaser Edition profits from the most recent upgrade of the Defender, in particular from the installation of the turbo-diesel power plant. The 2.2 litre four-cylinder engine delivering 122 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque also has a particle filter which means that the motor corresponds to the Euro 5 emissions norm.
At the ‘Jagd & Hund’ fair the Land Rover Defender Blaser Edition can be admired in its very British ‘Keswick Green’ livery from the 31st of January through the 5th of February. In Germany only 60 units will go on sale priced at 49,500 Euros and the Blaser Edition models will already reach dealerships from February.
