Just in time for the sixtieth birthday of the Corvette there comes the 427 Convertible Collector Edition from Chevrolet, the most powerful roadster in the history of the marque. (Stefan Wagner , 16.01.2012)
A potent pairing
The 2013 Corvette… the Americans are always a good year ahead in their planning… will be something a bit special from Chevrolet. The iconic automobile will not only celebrate its sixtieth birthday but this will also be the final year of the current C6 model generation, with the C7 autos set to then make their appearance. With such excuses for throwing a party there needed, of course, to be something special for dyed-in-the-wool fans of the marque and so the concern has arranged for the installation of the 427 cubic inch V8 motor in a Corvette soft-top. This seven litre power plant is inevitably that of the ZO6 and delivers 512 horsepower and 637 Nm of torque for the jubilee roadster. The transmission is a manual six-speed gearbox sending power to a rear axle which has also been borrowed from the ZO6. The driving dynamics of the Collector Edition auto also benefit from improved weight distribution… thanks to the placement of the battery at the back of the car… and the addition of the ‘MagneticSelective Ride’ damping control system.
Impressive power-to-weight ratio
In order to save weight Chevrolet have given their open special edition model 19 and 20 inch ‘Cup’ wheels with Michelin PS2 tyres mounted… the same combination as was used among other models for the ZR1 last year. Slimming measures also included the use of components fabricated in carbon composite materials… the bonnet cover from the ZO6 Carbon Edition, for instance, the mudguard sections and the underbody panels. The end result is a car which tips the scales at 1,522 kilos, and has a power-to-weight ratio of 2.97 kilos per unit of horsepower, leaving serious sports cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabrio or the Ferrari California in the shade. It is no surprise that the Collector Edition reaches a hundred kilometres an hour in 3.8 seconds and goes on accelerating until the speedometer shows 305 kilometres an hour.
Anniversary package
All 2013 Corvette models… including the 427 Convertible… can be embellished with the ‘60th Anniversary Package’. This starts with the special lacquer in ‘Arctic White’ and ‘Blue Diamond’ leatherwork. The special kit also features an carbon composite front fascia and the carbon side sills of the ZR1. The first Corvette 427 Cabrio will go under the hammer at a charity auction on the 21st of January. However Chevrolet have not yet announced either the pricing nor the date of the market launch. And there is also no word as to whether the model will be made available here in Germany.
