Edo Competition BMW M5 Touring
BMW M5 ‘Dark Edition’ by Edo
In Munich the new model is being unveiled with great ceremony but in Ahlen, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, an ‘old’ BMW M5 is being rejuvenated. In this instance that car concerned is the M5 Touring, in a ‘Dark Edition’ by Edo Competition. (Stefan Wagner

The V10 lives on
Now BMW have decided that it is time for their ultimate power sedan, the M5, to get the bi-turbo treatment. The much loved V10 is yesterday’s news and must give way to the recently presented 560 horsepower bi-turbo V8 monster power plant. This should mean that the 507 horsepower naturally aspirated V10 will soon be forgotten. But not if Edo Karabegovic, head of the tuner Edo Competition, has anything to say about it. What he says is that one must take an M5 Touring of the previous generation and enhance the output of the naturally aspirated motorization. Thanks to a newly developed exhaust system with flap controls, a sports air filter, new sports cats and modified motor management electronics the power output has been upped to 555 horsepower and 560 Newton metres of torque (standard was 520 Newton metres). All of this permits the Edo M5 to run to a hundred in 4.2 seconds, 0.5 of a second faster than the original model, and to hit a maximum speed of 305 kilometres an hour.

Visual enhancement
The rejuvenation cure is includes some nice tinkering with the car’s look. There’s a new front fascia, a fairing for the lower tail section and a new rear spoiler. The series 19 inch wheels are replaced with 20 inch sports rims wearing 255/35 rubber at the front and 285/30 at the back. Edo have tweaked the interior, putting in a speedometer calibrated up to 360 kilometres an hours and are perfectly willing to deliver any further customization that a customer might desire. And so this is how al ‘old’ M5 can be given a very appealing look, one which will even stand out when the new model hits the showrooms. And in future there’s to be no estate model on offer.
