Mercedes A-Class

Mercedes A-Class: Camouflage competition

The new Mercedes A-Class is to have its world première at the salon in Geneva at the beginning of March and there are still prototypes on the roads in the final stages of testing. But their camouflage takes the unusual form of QR code patterns. (Stefan Grundhoff, Florian Maier , 20.01.2012)

Advertising with a difference

Camouflaged prototypes are familiar with their dazzling monochrome patterning… nothing new about that. Particularly here in Munich garishly striped autos can be seen regularly notching up the test kilometres and challenging the paparazzi to get clear shots of a new body design or other exterior detail.

But the camouflage adopted for the new A-Class is also at the same time very subtle advertising, The black-and-white foil is intended to do more than just confuse and disguise. The pattern consists of QR codes which are fully intended to be photographed.

Here the idea is that the man or woman on the street should immediately pull out a smart phone and snap a shot of the A-Class car when it stops at a red light. Some lucky snapper who reads the QR code into their phone can win a trip for two to the world première of the A-Class auto in at the beginning of March.
