After the Maybach
Mercedes-Benz: Super S-Class to replace the Maybach?
After a withdrawal of the Maybach product line Mercedes has no intention of turning its back on the super-luxury automobile segment. According to the German car magazine AutoBild the plan is to hark back to the tradition of the historical 600 models with a range of modified S-Class models with wheel-bases of various lengths and even a Pullman version. A super S-Class
The rival car manufacturers should not imagine that Mercedes will abandon the super-luxury segment when the concern gives up on the Maybach. As AutoBild reports, the marque based in Stuttgart is planning to build Super-S-Class models which will look very different from the series vehicles in this product range.
The front fascia will remind many of the 600 with prominent headlights. The flanks of the auto will feature bulging wheel arches and character corrugations.
Many versions
At least six versions could be on offer… with short, long or extra-long wheel-bases and even as a 6.5 metre long Pullman. But convertible and coupé versions are also a possibility. The technology will draw on the existing Mercedes modules and would employ the Mercedes rear-wheel architecture ‘MRA’ for models with rear-wheel-drive. The motorizations could range from the 204 horsepower four-cylinder diesel to the twelve-cylinder engine with AMG tuning. The planning also includes hybrid drive variants… for Europe this would involve pairing a 109 horsepower electric motor with the four-cylinder diesel, for China and Russia the plug-in hybrid would combine an electric power plant with the V6 petrol engine.
A long list of optional and very costly extras can be expected to satisfy the whims of the rich and powerful. One such extra would be an active suspension controlled by information captured by a camera interpreting the road conditions.
