IAA 2011 preview
Frankfurt Motor Show 2011
The event is commonly referred to internationally as the Frankfurt Motor Show. IAA stands for the German appellation ‘Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung’, the event organized biennially by the Association of the German Automotive Industry (VDA). This year visitors will be invited to examine not only a wide range of new automobile models but will also witness the efforts by several car manufacturers to re-invent themselves completely. Here a first preview. (Sebastian Viehmann, Stefan Grundhoff

“Future comes as standard” is the motto of this year’s edition of the IAA. And this means that electrically powered vehicles and hybrids will no longer be shown only as concept studies but will be presented as models which will soon be on the streets and highways in significant quantities. Car makers like BMW and Volkswagen will both be presenting new micro-cars and intend to get not only an environmental message across but to make it quite clear that the enterprises themselves are steering in a direction which marks a big break with the past. Nevertheless there will still be room in Frankfurt for new high-powered sports car models to make petrol-heads’ hearts beat faster. The IAA 2011 will be open to the general public at the Frankfurt Trade Fair complex from the 17th through the 25th of September.
