It’s all about performance

Although there is a lot of discussion about why the A1 is failing to be a best seller this has not discouraged tuners from getting up close and personal with the premium compact model. Now Audi specialist Pogea Racing, known for their consummate software tuning skills, have come up with their own modified A1. The tuner based in Markdorf have concentrated their attention almost entirely on performance and this is not just limited to getting more power out of the 1.4 litre TSI.

Before chip tuning the standard model developed 122 horsepower and 200 Newton metres of torque. After a ‘Stage One’ tuning the A1 puts out 156 horsepower and 266 Newton metres of torque.

No tuning box, please

Although this is, of course, the first step. Pogea see the standard 122 horsepower and 200 Newton metres of torque as just the point of departure. And they have not resorted to the installation of any additional control devices to pimp the little turbo motor but simply used classic chip tuning methods, a fact which Pogea point to with pride. After a ‘Stage One’ tuning the A1 puts out 156 horsepower and 266 Newton metres of torque. ‘Stage Two’ sees the addition of extra air cooling and further tweaking of the electronics to produce 164 horsepower and 285 Newton metres of torque. Both versions benefit for an exhaust system developed in-house by Pogea with a BMC sports air filter and twin 76 millimetre end tubes.

Pogea have not yet released performance data for Pogea Racing’s pimped premium compact but the data can be expected in the immediate future.

Nimble in the curves

As mentioned earlier, more power is just part of the Pogea solution. They have made major improvements to the driving dynamics of the A1 with components of the finest calibre. They have fitted KW Variant 1 stainless-steel coilovers. Road holding is enhanced with the ultra-light 8x18 inch OZ Alleggerita HLT rims which are given Conti Sport Contact 3 tyres. The alloys help to reduce the unsprung mass considerably – each weighing no more than 7.7 kilos. Stopping power is increased thanks to the Brembo brakes front and back. All in all, modifications have been made in all the right places. Now it is to be hoped that demand for the Pogea A1 will be proportionately higher than that for the original vehicle.
